The statue of Carlo Guzzi in Mandello del Lario, a monument between commemoration and community identity
In Mandello del Lario, the founding place of Moto Guzzi, stands a bronze statue depicting Carlo Guzzi, a key figure in the development of the Italian motorcycle industry. The work, created by the sculptor Ettore Gambioli, represents an example of a commemorative monument that intertwines celebratory and identity purposes with the active participation of the local community, particularly through the "Anima Guzzista" association.
The initiative for the statue's creation matured in the context of the 90th anniversary of the founding of Moto Guzzi in 2011. However, the project's genesis is rooted in the desire to preserve and honor the memory of Carlo Guzzi, an instance strongly supported by the "Anima Guzzista" association. This association, composed of brand enthusiasts, played a proactive role in promoting the monument's idea. Alberto Sala, the association's president, publicly urged the municipal administration of Mandello del Lario to create a work dedicated to the founder of Moto Guzzi, emphasizing the importance of keeping the memory of his contribution alive.
The statue's realization was entrusted to Ettore Gambioli, a sculptor who knew how to interpret the figure of Carlo Guzzi with a realistic style and particular attention to detail. The statue depicts him in work clothes, with a stopwatch in hand, symbols of his meticulousness. His gaze is directed towards the factory, emphasizing his role as founder and leader of the company.
